Navigating the Roads of Curaçao

Driving in Curaçao offers a unique experience, combining stunning scenery with distinct local driving customs. Here are some tips to help you navigate the roads safely and enjoy your journey:

1. Drive on the Right: Curaçao, like many Caribbean islands, drives on the right side of the road.

2. Be Mindful of Roundabouts: Roundabouts are common in Curaçao. Yield to traffic already in the roundabout. Some Roundabouts have changed rules, watch the signs and observe other drivers.

3. Theft prevention: Don’t leave anything in your car, espcially if you are going to the beach, or park in the city. Any object can attract a thief to break into your car. If there is nothing to take, no one will break in.

4. Beware of Speed Bumps: Curaçao has a network of speed bumps, so slow down and be alert.

5. Fuel Up Regularly: While there are gas stations throughout the island, it’s wise to fill up when you are about to explore the western part of the island. There are not many stations.
When fiueling up, you need to pay first the amount you want to buy. In case you paid too much and it does not fit in your tank, just go back an get your change.

6. Respect Local Customs: Be patient and courteous to other drivers, as local customs may differ from what you’re used to.

7. Use Caution on Unpaved Roads: Some roads, are unpaved, whereby some paved roads are in horrible conditions. Exercise caution and adjust your speed accordingly to avoid tire damages.

8. If yuo need GPS: You can use your phone for navigation. There is a free App (maps.me) that does not require internet connection to work. Once the map from Curacao is on your phone, you are god to go.

9. Park Safely: Look for designated parking areas or follow local parking regulations. Parking spots with a number are to pay.

10. Enjoy the Drive: Take your time and appreciate the beautiful scenery while driving in Curaçao. Speedlimit in Curacao is 80 km/h. If you feel the need for speed, please try a playstation 😉
Keep in mind: the roads are getting very slippery in Curacao, when its raining. Maintain more distance to vehicles infront of you.
